Safety Policy

What happens when a conversation shows signs of danger, and the help that is always available.

How Speak2Hear responds to danger signals

Our agents monitor for language that indicates threats, abuse, self-harm, or immediate danger. When detected, the session pauses and help is shown.

Threats of violence

If any participant expresses intent to harm the other person, themselves, or anyone else, the mediation pauses immediately.

  • Session is locked — no further messages can be sent
  • Both parties see a full-screen safety notice with local crisis resources
  • No summary, agreement, or next step is generated
  • The conversation cannot resume until a human reviewer clears it

Self-harm or suicide language

If a participant indicates they are thinking about hurting themselves or ending their life, the session pauses immediately.

  • Crisis resources shown to that person (988 in US, local equivalents elsewhere)
  • The other person is notified that the session paused for safety — no details shared
  • No pressure to continue, reconcile, or "work it out"
  • Conversation data preserved for the participant to access later

Signs of abuse or coercion

Patterns of control, intimidation, gaslighting, or fear trigger a safety-first response.

  • We favour safety over compromise — no mediation proceeds under coercion
  • The person at risk receives private resources and exit-planning links
  • The other person is not told what triggered the pause
  • No agreement is drafted; the session ends with a safety notice

Immediate danger to others

If a participant indicates someone else (a child, partner, family member) is in danger right now.

  • Emergency services contact info shown prominently
  • Mandatory reporting obligations followed where they apply
  • No attempt to mediate, reframe, or de-escalate the danger
  • Session ends; data preserved for authorities if needed

What Speak2Hear never does

These boundaries are hard-coded into every agent and cannot be overridden by settings, prompts, or user requests.

Push toward reconciliation

We do not treat "staying together" or "making up" as a goal. The only goal is that each person is heard and can decide what they want.

  • No "compromise" suggestions that ask someone to accept harm
  • No language like "give it another try" or "for the sake of the relationship"
  • Ending the relationship is always a valid outcome

Minimise or reframe abuse

Agents will not label controlling behaviour as "communication issues" or suggest both people "take responsibility."

  • Power imbalances are named, not balanced
  • Fear is treated as data, not a feeling to "work through"
  • The person experiencing harm is never asked to "meet halfway"

Share private content without consent

Nothing crosses to the other person without explicit, line-by-line approval. Safety pauses are the only exception — and even then, only the fact of a pause is shared, never the content.

  • Your private brief stays private unless you toggle each line to share
  • Agent notes are never shown to the other person
  • You can delete any remembered item at any time

Act as therapist, lawyer, or emergency responder

Speak2Hear is a structured conversation tool. It does not diagnose, treat, advise legally, or intervene physically.

  • No clinical assessments or treatment plans
  • No legal interpretation or document preparation
  • No dispatch of emergency services

How safety signals are detected

Detection runs locally in your browser and on our servers. No human reads your conversation unless a safety pause triggers a review.

Detection methods

On-device classifier

A lightweight model scans each message before it leaves your device. Explicit threats, self-harm language, and known coercion patterns are flagged instantly — no network round-trip.

Server-side review

When a message passes the local check, a server model re-evaluates with more context (conversation history, relationship type). This catches escalation patterns the local model might miss.

Human safety review

Only when a pause triggers. A trained reviewer sees the flagged messages and context — nothing else. They decide whether to clear the session, refer to emergency services, or keep it paused.

What triggers a pause

  • Explicit threat language — "I will hurt you," "I'm going to kill myself," "If you leave I'll destroy you"
  • Coercion patterns — Monitoring location, controlling money, threatening immigration status, using children as leverage
  • Self-harm indicators — "I don't want to be here," "Everyone would be better off without me," specific plans or means
  • Danger to third parties — Mentions of harming children, pets, family members, or anyone else

Data handling during safety events

What happens to your conversation data when a safety pause occurs.

  • Encryption preserved

End-to-end encryption remains active. The safety classifier runs on encrypted data via secure enclaves or on-device — plaintext never leaves your control.

  • Minimal logging

Only the flagged message, its classification score, and the pause action are logged. Full conversation history is not exported unless a valid legal request compels it.

  • You retain access

Your conversation history, briefs, and agent notes remain in your account. A pause does not delete or lock you out of your own data.

  • Deletion on request

You can delete any conversation, relationship, or your entire account at any time from Settings. Safety pauses do not prevent deletion.

This is not emergency help

Speak2Hear cannot contact emergency services, dispatch help, or intervene in a crisis. If you or someone else is in danger, call your local emergency number immediately.

This is not legal advice

Agreements drafted in Speak2Hear are not legally binding documents. They are records of what both people understood and agreed to in the moment. For legal protection, consult a qualified attorney.

This is not therapy

Speak2Hear agents do not diagnose, treat, or provide mental health care. They facilitate structured conversation. For mental health support, please contact a licensed therapist or crisis line.

We favour safety over compromise

When there are signs of coercion, abuse, or power imbalance, Speak2Hear will not propose compromises, next steps, or agreements that ask the person at risk to accept harm. The session will pause, resources will be shown, and no mediation will proceed until safety is established.
